This is going to be so fun. We’re studying seven English conversations and you’re going to be speaking. Tons of English speaking practice here.
When you’re learning another language, you just need to speak it as much as you can to build that conversational ability. You’ll watch a conversation and we’ll define any terms you might not know. Then you will be speaking both parts. You need to speak out loud for this, don’t leave me hanging in silence. Then after all the conversations, we’ll review the vocabulary and then you can watch them all one more time.
I’m Rachel, I have a background in opera singing and I’ve been teaching the American accent to non-native speakers for over 20 years. In the first conversation you broke your windshield.
Hello.
Hi, I’ve got a pretty large crack in my windshield and I wanted to know what we could do about it.
The windshield is the glass on the front of a car that you look out of when you’re driving.
We can take care of that for you. How big is the brake?
Well, now it spans almost across the whole windshield. Maybe 3 feet. It started out as just a little crack, but then it totally split horizontally.
Horizontal is this way. Vertical is this way.
Yes, temperature changes and hitting bumps can do that. What’s the make and model of the car?
It’s a Honda Odyssey, 2018.
Alright, we’ll get that glass ordered for you. And it looks like we can install it next Tuesday. Would that work for you?
Yes, that would be great. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Now we need to have you practice speaking. I’ll play person one, and you play person two. I’ll put on screen the text for you to say out loud.
Hello?

Now, you’re going to the doctor.
It got very swollen and I couldn’t walk.
If it’s swollen, it gets enlarged and puffed up.
The X-ray shows there’s no fracture.
A fracture is the medical term for a broken bone.
Oh, great. What did the MRI show?
An MRI is a scan of the body that can show the internal organs and that kind of thing different from an X-ray which shows the bones.
Unfortunately it showed a complete tear of the main ligament in the ankle a complete tear is when something absolutely suffers there’s no connection. This is different from a partial tear where part of it is still attached.
Oh no. What’s a ligament anyway?
A ligament is connective tissue that attaches bone to bone. This is different from a tendon which attaches muscle to bone.
Shoot. How long will it take to heal?
To heal means to get well. And actually it sounds just like this word, heel which is part of the foot.
About 12 weeks then three months of physical therapy.
I’m so sorry that happened to you. Let’s practice speaking out loud. I’ll be injured, you be the doctor.
It got very swollen and I couldn’t walk.

Now you’re sitting with your roommate and you’re trying to decide what to watch on TV tonight.
What are we feeling tonight?
Honestly, we need a new show. I’m feeling burned out on the current series.
Burned out means you’re not interested in it anymore, you’re tired of it.
Oh, really?
Yeah. I’m burned out, I’m just bored with it.
Why?
I don’t know. Too much violence? I’m just over it.
When you’re over something, you don’t want to have anything to do with it anymore, you’re tired of it, it doesn’t interest you.
Well, I hope you’re not over hanging out with me.
Never!
You have a really cool roommate. Now, to practice speaking out loud, first, I’ll be person one and you be person two.
What are we feeling tonight?

Okay, your ankle is all healed but your retainer broke.
My retainer broke and I’m wondering if you can make some impressions for me and make me a new one.
A retainer is something you wear on your teeth to keep them from moving. And impressions are when you stick your teeth into something gooey so that they can then make a mold. An exact mold of your teeth. But impression also means a lasting memory. His kindness made a real impression on me.
Yes, we can take impressions and make a retainer for you but your insurance doesn’t cover that so it’ll be $500.
Holy smokes, that’s insane!
Holy smokes is a phrase you can use to show that you’re completely surprised. It is a little old-fashioned but I still use it.
Well I guess I have no choice since I want straight teeth.
When do you want to come in?
I already have an appointment for a routine cleaning next week. Can we just schedule it after that?
Sure! See you then.
Thanks.
Now we need you to practice speaking out loud. First, I’ll have the broken retainer.

Now, you get to run into a friend on the street.
Marcia, hey!
Oh, my goodness! Hi! How are you?
Doing pretty well. The kids are both in school this fall, so we’ve entered a whole new world.
Are they liking it?
Yeah, for the most part. And it gives me a lot more flexibility with things like work and errands.
Sounds like you’re finding your new groove.
Finding your new groove means getting used to new routines. How about you?
Oh, same old, same old.
This phrase means nothing is new. The routine hasn’t changed. But we did get a puppy this summer so that sort of spiced things up.
If something spices things up, it means makes life a little bit more interesting.
Oh, I’m sure the kids are loving that.
Let me get your number and we can meet up for a coffee.
I’m on my way to an appointment right now.
I’m so glad we ran into each other.
By the way when you run into someone that means you saw them on the street not that you actually ran into them.
Likewise.
Time to practice out loud. I’ll be friend number one.
Marcia, hey!

So, you made plans but now they’re getting cancelled.
Hey Rachel, I’m so sorry i have to cancel our plans for tomorrow.
Oh no!
I know. Julian is sick and I have to stay home with him he just can’t seem to shake this cold.
To shake something means to get rid of it.
Shoot.
Shoot is a verb like when you shoot with a gun but it’s also expression to show disappointment. Shoot. Dang. Darn.
Do you want to reschedule for next week are you around?
In this case around means available, in town.
No, I’m not. Can we bump that to the following Tuesday? Tuesday the 8th?
To bump in scheduling means to push something back to a later date or time than originally planned.
Yeah. I’m free the 8th.
Oh good. See you then and I hope Julian feels better soon.
Yeah. Thanks.
Time to practice out loud. to start I’m the one with the sick kid.
Oh no!
Shoot!

Yeah, I’m free the 8th.
Yeah, thanks.
Now, you get to go on a trip with your friends.
Hey, I just found three houses within our budget for our girls weekend.
Within our budget means we can afford to pay it, we have enough money. If it’s out of our budget or above our budget, then it’s more than we want to pay.
Oh, great! Are they all beachfront?
Just one of them is. The other two are a block off.
Here a block off means a block away from.
Let’s go with the beachfront property. I like to be able to see the ocean while I sip my morning coffee.
Property is another word for building house or a lot of land or multiple buildings on one piece of land.
Great! I’ll book it now.
When you book a property, you put down some money. Either a deposit or pay the whole thing. And sometimes you sign an agreement. Other things you can book: a plane ticket, a hotel room.
Fun!
It’s our final conversation, time to practice speaking. First, I’ll be the friend who found the three houses.

I would love it if every day this week you watched the training part of the video where you participate out loud in the conversation. The more you practice speaking the easier it becomes. Here’s an idea: Try making up your own responses within the conversations. Just anything to get you thinking and speaking.
